The History of Tunturi

Tunturi’s rich history starts way back in the year 1922. The foundations of the Tunturi brand began when the Harkke brothers set up a small bike shop in Turku, Finland. The name Tunturi comes from the Finnish word for “Highland.” Bike repairs were the shop’s main focus at first, then gradually they added production, manufacturing Tunturi Bicycles on a larger scale. The production was highly successful, and within just a few years the small shop was exchanged for a factory that was modern for its time. You may not realize it, but in the 1950′s the Tunturi brand was the market leader in mopeds.

It was from this technology and expertise gained from the bicycle production, that Tunturi went on to invest strongly in fitness equipment product development. Tunturi recognized the importance of healthy living and fitness as a fundamental basis for the future. In the 1970′s, Tunturi became recognized internationally as an influential producer of fitness equipment, being sold throughout the world.

In the 1990′s, an important strategic decision was made to focus on the production of Tunturi fitness products and Tunturi bicycles. This decision was important for the further development of the brand. Tunturi is now a well-known brand in Scandinavian countries and Tunturi Fitness products are sold in over 40 countries.

In 2003, Tunturi Oy Ltd. was acquired by the Accell Group. The Accell Group is Europe’s largest producer and seller of bicycles and fitness equipment, including well-known brands such as Koga Miyata, Batavus, Lapierre, Winora and Red Line. Accell Group’s acquisitions of Tunturi is a guarantee for the future!
